Catching up with Senior PG Jelly Mealing

jelly
Hey Knight Fans,

I hope you guys are having as great of a summer as I am! As you all know, the summer is a very critical time for us to improve our games and prepare for the upcoming season! This summer, I have been working extremely hard to not only improve on the basketball court, but in the classroom as well.

Now that I am a senior I am preparing for life after basketball. I intend to graduate in December, a semester early, with a Bachelor’s degree in Interpersonal/Organizational Communication, a minor in Marketing. After my completion of undergrad, I have aspirations of gaining acceptance into the DeVos Sport Business Management graduate program here at UCF. So I have been “on the grind” this summer; volunteering, studying for the GMAT and working two internships. One internship is with our very own Sports Marketing staff, and the other is with the Orlando Extreme, a semi-professional women’s basketball team.

As far as basketball is concerned, I have been working very hard! I get up hundreds of shots a week, lift weights and condition with our strength coach Tracy Prosser 3 to 4 times a week, and I go to the recreation center pretty much everyday to play pick up games against some guys. I do all of this while still taking two classes, Spanish and Entertainment Marketing. My days can be extremely hard and tiring, but I love it and I can’t see myself doing anything else.

I speak for my entire team when I say we are putting in the time and effort to give our amazing fans a very thrilling and competitive season this year! We have nothing but another Conference USA Championship and becoming a top 25 program in our eyes, so come enjoy the ride!

Until Next Time Knight Fans,
Your Very Own “Jellyyyy” =)

Judge Named Georgia Player of the Year

UCF women's basketball signee Aarika Judge, one of three prep standouts to sign National Letters of Intent (NLIs) to play collegiately for head coach Joi Williams and the Knights this fall, was recently named The Augusta Chronicle Georgia girls basketball player of the year.

Judge, a senior at Hephzibah High School, averaged 17.6 points per game this past season and tallied six rebounds, six assists and six steals per game. She also made 86 three-pointers in 2009-10.

While Judge's individual success is astounding, it is her team success over her four-year high school career that really stands out. In four seasons at Hephzibah, Judge led her team to a 101-19 record and to the Region 3-AAAA championship three times.

The Top 10 Performances by UCF Players in 2009-10

Speaking to the balance of the 2009-10 edition of the UCF women's basketball team, listing the top-10 individual performances from the past season was a difficult task. The list in 2008-09 probably would have featured five games each from all-conference performers Chelsie Wiley (Riviera Beach, Fla.) and Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.). This season, with six players averaging between 6.6 and 11.6 points per game, many more players earned spots on the list.

Cannon and Wiley, who both surpassed the 1,000-point plateau this season, still earned spots with great games, but they were joined by many of their fellow Knights as six different players made the list.

Kelly Leads Knights to Victory in Finale

One after another, UCF players stepped up and made plays, and one after another, UCF players stepped up and made shots. No player stepped up more than sophomore Ashia Kelly (Longview, Texas), who surpassed her career-high in points in the second half alone and led six players in double figures as the aggressive Knights (10-15, 7-9 C-USA) closed the regular season with an 84-72 victory at Southern Miss (9-20, 5-11) Wednesday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

"We wanted to come in here tonight and be aggressive offensively, and I tried to do my part to do that for our team," Kelly said. "This is a tough place to play, and since it was Senior Night we knew they would be fired up. We did a good job stepping up to the challenge and ending our regular season on a good note."

UCF Plays Finale at Southern Miss Wednesday

The first 12 meetings between Southern Miss and UCF were one-sided, with the Golden Eagles claiming a win in each of the games. The contests over the last two seasons have been anything but. The travel partners have developed a recent rivalry as the Knights have won three of the series past four games, including the thrilling overtime contest in the 2009 Conference USA tournament title game last March.

On Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST, UCF will play at Southern Miss to close the regular season. Both teams will look to post a win and build momentum in the last tune-up before the 2010 C-USA Championships begin next week in Tulsa. With the league's jam-packed standings, the game will be important as both teams jockey for higher seeds.

Chelsie Featured on UCFAthletics.com

Chelsie Wiley had always been taught that shooters have short memories and live in the moment. So when the in-game announcement came last week that UCF's standout shooting guard scored her 1,000th point, she never once thought about soaking in the magnitude of the moment.

She helped her teammates get a defensive stop and then 34 seconds later boosted her career total to 1,002 career points with a nifty one-handed runner in the lane. It's a singular focus that helped the junior guard overcome an early-season slump and evolve into UCF's leading scorer down the stretch of this season.

Knights Down Houston as Wiley scores 1,000th career point

Two nights after one of its worst shooting nights of the season, UCF's women's basketball team came back Saturday night locked and loaded and delivered one of its finest shooting performances.

And UCF coach Joi Williams is convinced that the difference was more because of a mindset change than simply the ball falling one night and not on another night.

UCF scored its third-most points of the season by getting four players in double digits and holding a staggering 55-28 rebounding advantage in a 78-66 whipping of Houston that was one of the Knights' finest wins of the season.

Junior guard Chelsie Wiley had a team-high 21 points and scored her 1,000th career point with 56 seconds left in the first half. She made six of 13 shots, hit all eight of her free throws and grabbed six rebounds. She said she had no clue that she was close to moving into the 1,000-point club, but her focus was intently on helping UCF win in its final home game of the regular season.

Before ending the season with a three-game road trip, the UCF women's basketball team hosts Houston at 7 p.m. Saturday night in its home finale at the UCF Arena. The Knights will be looking to bounce back from a frustrating 65-59 loss to Rice on Thursday night and build momentum before the stretch run and the Conference USA Tournament in early March.

Wiley Closing in on 1,000 as Knights Host Rice

After splitting a pair of road games last weekend, UCF returns to the UCF Arena Thursday night, hosting Rice at 7 p.m. for the first of two final home games in 2009-10. The Knights have won three of their last four overall and three of their last four on their home floor.

Junior Chelsie Wiley (Riviera Beach, Fla.) stands just 18 points shy of becoming the program's 13th member of the 1,000-point club. Teammate Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) topped the milestone earlier this season.

Last weekend, UCF battled out an 80-73 win at UAB on Friday night before losing a close 76-72 game to league-leading Memphis on Sunday. The Knights benefitted from a pair of career-high point totals to produce strong offensive performances. In Friday's win over the Blazers, junior Marshay White (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a career-high 26 points and UCF knocked down eight three-pointers. Sunday it was junior D'Nay Daniels (Atlanta, Ga.) with the strong outing, tallying 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting.

Knights Aim for Fourth-Straight Win Sunday

After notching its first C-USA road win on Friday night, UCF will aim to complete a stretch of four revenge games with an unblemished 4-0 record Sunday at Memphis at 3 p.m. EST. Riding a season-best three-game winning streak, the Knights can make it four in a row by defeating a Memphis team that won in Orlando 49-47 on Jan. 15.

In Friday night's contest at UAB, junior Marshay White (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a career-high 26 points off the bench to help UCF to an 80-73 victory. White was not alone for the Knights, as fellow juniors D'Nay Daniels (17), Chelsie Wiley (11) and Angelica Mealing (10) each tallied double figures.

Knights Win Second-Straight

If one win is a step, then two could very well be a full-out trot for the UCF women's basketball team. Now, the Knights are hoping they can put together a strong run similar to last season's stirring finish.

Their early-season struggles now a distant memory, UCF put together its third consecutive stellar effort and won for a second time in a row, this time beating Conference USA power East Carolina 60-50 at UCF Arena.

Remarkably, UCF (6-12, 3-6) has not trailed in the 80 minutes of the past two victories against Marshall and ECU (17-6, 6-4). UCF led or was tied all throughout Saturday's game and delivered a key 15-4 spurt after East Carolina had gotten the score tied at 42-all.

UCF Hosts ECU Saturday at 7 p.m.

One revenge game down, three to go for UCF in a stretch of four-straight against teams that beat UCF earlier this season. After getting back at Marshall with a 56-47 victory Thursday night, the Knights will return to the court Saturday to host East Carolina at 7 p.m., a team that downed UCF 73-62 on Jan. 10. In that contest, UCF stayed close despite committing 31 turnovers and junior Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) battling foul trouble.

UCF Downs Southern Miss 70-60

Maybe, just maybe, this will be just what UCF's women's basketball team needs to regain its championship form from last season.

Facing the same Southern Miss team that it beat in last spring's Conference USA title game in overtime, UCF got contributions from all over the roster and delivered in the second half of a 70-60 defeat of the Golden Eagles.

"We played more aggressively and with the intensity that we need to play with from start to finish."

The players had fun designing UCF t-shirts, playing rock band and talking about basketball to the children at Florida's Hospital. But in the end the children had more of an impact on the players than they expected. "We had an absolute blast hanging out with the kids today." "They are all dealing with tough circumstances, and we tried to bring our smiles and have fun playing games and hanging out. By the end of the day, it was the patients, especially Hot Wheel Neil, that were bringing happiness and fun to us. Their positive attitudes despite the adversity are inspiring and motivating." -D'Nay Daniels #2
